Hauswein

I don’t drink any alcohol, but i want those bottles.
I ♥ Maset del Lleó
This is the label of the current precious/2nd rec house wine. It looks –uhm– somehow ugly, but i like the usage of hearts:

Basa

To keep my promise: here’s the first wine label design I’d like to share. My bottle of Basa is a 2003 white wine from Rueda, Spain and it tasted fantastic when i was drinking it last summer. I wanted to provide some more background information and links, but that’s not so easy with wine and grape growers and anyway, it seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere (will maybe be back in summer 2006?).
Apart from its very nice overall appearance, Basa has a lot of nice details. The very plain graphic style surprised me when I first saw it. It is a very “modern” approach, but in a good way. I normally prefer the more traditional, classic style because most “modern” wine label designs I’ve seen looked pretty cheesy - from typographical wrongdoings to wannabe popart and so on. Something that made me smile when i removed the foil from the bottleneck was the ornament on the cork you can see on the image on the left. This is how the protection foil (is there a special word for that?) looks like. It has a banknote-like pattern that is in a pretty similar way …

About wine labels and keeping promises

I love red wine. I love the aesthetics of wine bottles, decanters, boxes, corks, corkscrews, wine glasses, different shades of red etc. But above all, I adore the graphic design of (well done!) wine labels. I’m dreaming of working on a wine label design some day, or maybe doing the art direction for a whole wine packaging concept.
Whenever I’m buying wine, I’m confronted with too many options. I prefer red wine from spain, so this narrows things down a bit, but still there are always at least 30-50 left that sound interesting. So my favorite additional filter criteria is the look, the way it is designed, which most likely leaves me with a manageable choice of around 10-15 bottles. And definitely gives me disrespect from wine sellers and true wine experts.
On the image above you can see that i just received a package full of new wine. In the future, I’m going to share my favorite wine label designs here. I’m not showing you something I did not drink myself, so I’ll be always able to judge if the nice packaging kept its promise (at least to my taste).
