Designing Interactions

I saw the book Designing Interactions at the Pro qm book store in Berlin some weeks ago and it looked very promising. Now I found out that you can read excerpts or summaries of all chapters on the website, which is therefore also part of the publication. You can also watch video interviews with many different personalitites from the Interaction Design field and download several interview movies and one whole chapter as a PDF.
There is a short and simple sentence on the introduction page of the website which I think makes intentions and ambitions of Interaction Design quite tangible:
Designers of digital technology products no longer regard their job as designing a physical object—beautiful or utilitarian—but as designing our interactions with it.
Thinking it ahead for virtual objects such as software applications, we will come across more and more situations where our conventional Input-Output-System, the computer with a screen, mouse and keyboard, won’t suffice and satisfy to realize our ideas. The challenging and exciting thing about the Interaction Design field and its growing importance and popularity is the need of thinking about virtual and physical aspects at the same time and the very obvious irrelevance to separate industrial from interface design development.

Ja, schon gesehen – genial ist das, nur “leider” habe ich am 31.3. Geburtstag und bin mir noch nicht sicher, ob ich ihn dort verbringen will! :-)
