Inner-city youth Part Deux - Manhattan
After seeing Silke’s post I immediately had to think about Marth Cooper, the photo journalist responsible for documenting the emerging New York City hip-hop scene in the 80s. Along with Henry Chalfont, Martha won the respect of the underground enough the get down and inside. Thanks to her we have a true archive of hip-hop’s birth.

They have published two quintessentiall graffiti books called “Subway Art” and “Spraycan Art” as well as another great hardcover called “Hip Hop Files”. I highly recommend checking these out.

Ah, I love pretty much all of Martha Cooper’s work … btw - Leigh owns a huge signed print of one of her photographs (used to be up in her old office) - definitely worth checking out!
