iPod shuffle in the washing machine
… does not sound like a good idea, huh?
I also found my wife’s iPod Shuffle at the bottom of our washing machine a few weeks ago. The Apple headphones were also washed. We took the Shuffle out, let it sit for an hour or so to dry out, and she then popped it into her laptop PC (I wasn’t going to let her try it on my PowerBook!) and it immediately started charging, and played music just fine. The headphones seemed dead, but after a day or so of drying out, they were also OK. So, my advice to you is let the unit sit for awhile (which you’ve probably already done…) and give it a try. Since there are no moving parts in the Shuffle, nothing should have been destroyed by washing it.
DO NOT TEST IT YET! Of course you are anxious to see if it “still works”. If it is wet inside, and you power it on, it will die instantly, before your finger is off the switch! Since you can’t easily open the iPod, I would KEEP IT TURNED OFF in a warm-dry place for a week, blow dry at it once or twice a day, while shaking/tapping it gently on it’s edges.
Water will play havoc with ANY live circuits! If your iPod is dead, that would be the cause. However, most electronic parts (power sources removed) can handle a wash quite well. Industrial maintenance departments do it routinely. Dust, grime, grease and such, all add up to potentially short a circuit, corrode contacts, etc.
Overnight soaks in heavy cleaners, with a water rinse in the morning is common. Just make sure everything is FULLY DRY, inside & out, BEFORE returning anything back into the live circuit!
Blow drier on low heat, will help. Compressed air is faster, as long as it does not force water into part seams like a relay cover… Common sense rules. Wet is bad, dry is good!
I should have read case 2 before I plugged it in my computer - mine seems to be dead (it froze my computer, then I took it off and the battery light was red, the computer worked again). We’ll see, maybe it’ll work again in some days.
So if you’re as stupid as me, read case 2 carefully before you do anything with your washed shuffle.
[Update] All of a sudden, my iPod shuffle works again! Don’t ask me why, I connected it to my computer several days later and it works just fine. Loading up my new The Decemberists albums and walk around a bit, bare-footed, singing along, jumping around like a fuckin’ hippie.

My 512mb ipod shuffle went through a complete wash cycle. The headphones and USB cap were still plugged in/intact after the wash. I took the cap off and unplugged the headphones and set it on top of my desktop computer case(it warms up to 80 degrees F) for one week. I didn’t press ANY buttons on the ipod. Periodically, I sucked air through the ipod with my mouth in an attempt to evaporate any liquids in the device. This was done by sealing my lips around the USB jack or the headphone port and sucking in air.
After one week I pressed the battery life indicator button on the back of the ipod. It showed a yellow light! I then plugged my headphones in and pressed play. The ipod has been playing perfectly for 2 weeks now. Amazing!

I just put my son’s Ipod Shuffle through the washing machine yesterday. I let it dry out and tried it today, it didn’t work….Here’s what I did to get it working.
1. Turn the Switch to the off position and using a knife popped the button off from the left side.
2. Using plyers, pull the USB Plug out slightly (not too far, it appears to be a delecate cable)
3. Using a Pen I pushed the chasis out of the plastic case.
What I found was that the USB plug is connected to the battery using a ribbon cable with Adhesive. I pushed the cable firmly back onto the battery, reassembled and it works fine now!
One note, if anyone attempts this, make sure you keep the battery check button facing down. I turned the case upside down and this button fell out! It was a pain to get back in….I was surprised how easy it was to fix…..the headphones are toast.

I accidently washed my ipod shuffle last night. I may have killed it. The iopd sat in the washer for about 2 hours before I discovered it. After a few minutes of stressing, I pulled th ipod into my computer. The green and amber light flashed, then went amber (as if charging). This went on for about five minutes, then a message popped up on the computer screen saying it didn’t recognize the ipod. I have left the ipod sit and dry out completly. If only I had search google first. Duh!!

I washed my son’s Ipod nano- 1 gig. Complete wash cycle and I found it when putting the clothes in the dryer. I tried to plug it in right away and the screen just blinked and it kinda went zzzzt. I unplugged and we just left it alone for about 2 weeks. He runs the fan in his room a lot. I went ahead and bought him a new one - 4 gig, as it was my fault and he had bought the original one with his own money. and it was for early Christmas too. Then one day i decided to just plug it in and hey, presto, it works fine. now I have an IPOD too!

o0o man just five minutes ago i was taking my clothes out the dryer and i see my ipod shuffle (original model). I was so shocked and bummed I thought my shuffle was dead. I turned it on right away and it played music great. the headphones are good too. o man im so lucky i didnt see the ipod while moving the clothes from the washer to dryer or the thing would be most likely broken. the wierd thing now is the lights above the controls. they are not aligned perfectly anymore. the yellow one is a bit to the left side, just a bit, but it is noticable. Also sometimes when i turn it off the yellow light faintly blinks really fast. O man im so happy my shuffle is still alive. Respect for APPLE for making a durable stick of music.

Ok, so I washed my ipod nano, too. (you would think apple would plan for this, it seems to happen to a lot of people).
Here’s the series of events for me: after the wash, i waited and dried it out for a few days. Then I plugged it in and it would charge, but not mount. The screen lights up at this point, but no display. Finally, after a few more days of charging I can get it to mount, itunes will recognize it, and so I went through the restore function. The restore was succesful, I then put new music on it, and it seems to be working fine for the audio. However, the screen is still only lighting up with no display. No battery icon, no song info, nada: just a blank white screen. So, basically, it is now an expensive shuffle.
Anyways, I have searched around and though I have found many articles on washed nanos coming back to life, I have not found anything on what to do when the screen is nuked. Does anyone have any ideas?????

My wife washed her ipod shuffle in the washing machine. That is, she lost track of it about week ago, and just found it ! It went through the regular program, warm water, with spinning, no bleach. We took it out before it went into the dryer. Five minutes on the table and we anxiously plugged it in to my laptop. It worked like charm. The headphones worked too. The shuffle has no screen - lucky me. It is a simple white color ipod, very clean and shiny at this time. I applaud to Apple for the robust design !

Well, I washed my (new model) shuffle and I immediately panicked and felt like crying and turned it on no light. I freaked out and went to my computer plugged it into the adapter and it turned amber as if charging but windows nor itunes would recognize it. My little sister got a brand new nano a couple weeks ago, and accidentally put it in the washer. We went to switch the clothes to the dryer and found it, and almost cried. Luckily we found this page before we did anything, so we didn’t try to turn it on or anything. You could see water behind the screen, and I was thinking best case scenario it would work again, but the screen would be messed up.
We let it sit on a towel for a day, then put it in a jar with 5 packets of silicone gel (like you get inside new purses and such, I think that’s what it’s called, it absorbs moisture) and let it sit there 2 days. Took it out, plugged it in, and it appears to be working perfectly! You can’t even tell anything even ever happened to it. We are thrilled.

When getting and small electronic device wet follow these steps.
Rule #1. Don’t plug it in or turn it on, this is the best way to destroy your device
#2 Put some plain white rice (uncooked of course) in a bowl. Set your iPod or other device on the rice and then cover your device up with some more rice. The rice will actually draw out the moisture from the iPod.
#3 Place the bowl of rice and your iPod on a warm but not hot surface. Be creative
#4 Wait a few days to be safe, but then try using your iPod.
Hope this is helpful.

I have had my iPhone for three days now and allthough I took the phone out of my pocket (thank god) the head phones went through and the washer and the dryer too. I was bummed out because i know i was going to have to pay an arm and a leg for the new ones with the built in mic, but i guess after a complete wash and dry cycle the only thing that happened was it became nice and clean and kind of smelled like dawn a little. I notice no drop in sound quality. I guess the key to making these electronics work after being wet is to make absolutely sure they are dry. Try using silica gel, the stuff that comes in perishible foods and shoe boxes, in a tupperware container to remove all possible moisture from the circuf board. Or I guess you could just put it through the dryer but I recomend not doing that with anything battery powered being that batteries do not do well in high heat situations.

Heeeeeellppppppp! i lost my ipod nano months ago, thought it was stolen!! just two days ago found it in my trouser pocket in the ironing pile, it had been through the wash!!! :(
Good thing was it works, bad thing is, the touch pad and buttons dont work, only the “hold” switch works, which i use to turn it on, i have opened it up and cleaned most of the corrosion off it but still wont work, i am 15, was 14 when i got and i had to save up the money for this for a LONG time, and now im so dissapointed, i cant believe this could happen, now i know why i have a lock on my door, so i can stop my mum from getting “washing” which doesnt need to be washed and putting it in the washing machine!!!! and yet, she blames this on me, like she made me pay for my new phone after SHE spilt coffee all over it!! £200!! hardly fair, but anyway
ANYONE WHO CAN TELL ME HOW TO GET THE BUTTONS AND TOUCH PAD WORKING WOULD BE A LIFE SAVER - THE IPODS LIFE ANYWAYS!

I read some advice on this site and used the blow dryer for about 10 minutes on HIGH because I’m impatient. I started to notice minsicule drops of moisture on the screen and I freaked out and left it alone. I went out and when I got home I plugged it back into the dock and it worked fine. About 4 days after i called apple and told them my story and they dont do anything about it even if you have a warnty. Its “accedental” so yea. So I put it away and the next day I was curious and I turned it on AND IT WORKED!! I was amazed. I too have had iPod woes involving the washing machine.. I made the mistake of immediately trying to turn it on, THEN waiting until it dried completely. It charged up fine, which got my spirits up, but the battery life is absolute crap now. And to get it repaired it’ll cost me half the cost of another shuffle - $40. Worth it? I think I’m going to wait for another shuffle to be released before I splurge that $40. I have a PSP that works fine for all my musical needs as of now. (Ironically, minus the “portability” factor)

My sons ipod nano and headphones went into the washing machine two days ago. Luckily I found this website and just put it in a bowl of dry white rice and found one of those silicon packets and stuck that in too. Yesterday I took it out and blow dryed it for a few minutes then put it back into the ric e. The problem is I can still see the water under the screen. I actually have a few days left on our store warranty but obviously cannot bring it back with water under the screen. So, my question for anybody is how do you take the back off? I figure I can dry it out if I can get it apart w/o it looking like I tampered with it.

I washed my sons iPod accidentally and it was completely broken! Was told to put it in the freezer over night. Charged it the next day all day and SURPRIZINGLY it worked! Couldn’t believe it. Does anyone know why?

ok so my 7 year old son was so excited that i bought him his ipod shuffle that he takes it everywhere! i noticed that he put his shuffle in his pant pocket and i washed it! headphones and all! i was so worried it was about 2 hrs ago since i left the clothes in the dryer for some time but turned it on and it works!!! cant believe it, much props to the makers of the ipod shuffle!
any good advice, dont turn it on at least until a few hours later ….since i figured his was alrdy dry and that is why its still working ….god that would have been bad if i broke it for him after him having just a week! :(

Hello
To all those who fear water and your Ipod shuffle fear no more!!! This will not help you fix what is already damaged but will help prevent it from happening again and again and you will only have to replace your Ipod shuffle one time for this security. Think about it no more worries if it gets washed, dropped in water, wet from the rain, dropped in the toilet just rinse it right off, go ahead take a swim and tell all your friends to go to www.swimman.com or call (805) 484-3330 to purchase the original waterproof Ipod Shuffle and fear no more. Please tell them William Mills JR sent you so I can get credit for referring you to our wonderful product; I’m new and trying to impress my boss.
Thank you so much

I found an Ipod while walking and it seemed like it may be dead from the rain (a few hours ago) so I tested it and nothing….I dryed it and put it in rice (after waching a few tips on Youtube) for about 12 hours. I tried it afterwards and still….nothing….so I tried to find an owner and stuff. No such luck so now I have a broken Shuffle and I wanna fix it

I washed my shuffle and I was gutted. It was annoying, but I found this website about 2-3 weeks later, maybe more. It still wasnt switching on, but I charged it and it works now! Im soooo happy. I thank apple for making such a good design. I guess Im just luckier than other iPod owners with washed Ipods. I actually thought it would be clean, but the apple on the back is just scratched. Thats annoying, Id rather it got cleaned!!!!!!
